Schools of the Future Conference – November 3 & 4, 2015

Thanks to the generous donation of Mike Browning, CEO of Pacific Direct Connect, and the support of Chaminade University of Honolulu’s Provost, Dr. Helen Whippy, Chaminade’s exemplar faculty have the opportunity to attend this year’s Schools of the Future Conference.

Faculty have shared their experiences in a number of formats: 1) tweeting highlights to #CUHFacCtrSoF; 2) sharing ideas on social media, including the CUH Faculty Center Facebook; and 3) posting comments to this blog.

Details on the event can be found via the SoTF Conference Flyer.

New Faculty Events – August 12, 13, & 14, 2015

August 12-14, 2015, the Faculty Center will be hosting three events for its new faculty. All Chaminade faculty are welcome to attend, and are encouraged to RSVP by emailing, as lunch will be catered by local eateries.

August 12 – New Faculty Orientation (Loo Theatre)
The New Faculty Orientation is an active day for newly hired faculty members to meet our President and Provost. We will also hear from a faculty panel on the topic of promotion & tenure; the Faculty Senate President; and a student panel sharing their thoughts on learning. The Personnel Office will share critical information, and faculty will share some of the useful things to do in O’ahu, useful Hawaiian words for the classroom, and the Top 10 Things You Need to Know Right Now.

August 13 – Celebrate Academic Life (Ching Conference Center, Eiben Hall)

The Celebrate Academic Life event is a non-conference experience of collegial sharing. The celebration will focus on faculty sharing examples of their exemplary teaching, scholarship, or service. The format will be ten concurrent 25-minute interactive sessions of communal learning with conversations centered on the integration of active learning, meaningful scholarship, and community service. Our hope is that each person attending will leave the day with several concrete ideas, which they can add to their academic life in the Fall term.

August 14 – Course Redesign Studio (Loo Theatre)

The Course redesign Studio is an abbreviated day to assist faculty in redesigning their courses. The day will share learning theories to consider before design, then the Wiggins & McTighe Backward Design Model, which includes results (aligning student learning outcomes); evidence (assessment strategies, matrix, outcomes matrix), and experiences (planning, active strategies, teaching models), which culminate into syllabus design.

Summer 2015 Course Redesign Studio

This summer, the Chaminade University of Honolulu’s Faculty Center hosted two Course Redesign Studios. Participants in the June and July cohorts enjoyed time integrating research-driven teaching and learning strategies into redesigning their courses. The Studio was designed to facilitate the development of a formal written course plan, redesigned class meetings, and updated, appropriate, relevant, and meaningful course assignments with an associated assessment rubric. Congratulations to this summer’s Course Redesign Studio awardees:
